What’s up! So following on from my ‘Eat clean in 2016’ post, I’ve had a few people hit me up like ‘Sul that post was really useful and I’m going to start eating cleaner’. Major love, glad to help people!
However, a few people have asked me about smoothies and wanting to get into green smoothies. Either because they haven’t got the time to meal prep or they already eat relatively healthy and would like something extra packed with nutrients and vitamins to have on the go.
I actually went through a stage last year where a friend of mine who’s big into smoothies introduced me to green smoothies. Like most I was a bit apprehensive at first, like there’s a lot of greens in there! I don’t want to be drinking something that tastes like earth. But I always say you can’t knock something until you’ve tried it.
(Important) If you’re completely new to smoothies, I would recommend more fruit to veg/green. So 2 fruits, 1 veg or 4 fruits 2 veg etc. This helps to balance out the flavours, rather than you having an overpowering taste of vegetables. Of course, the more veg you include the healthier the smoothie. But I’ll leave you to decide if you can bare the taste!
Below are some ideas of ingredients to include in your green smoothies (Don’t put all these ingredients into one smoothie, well you could but it would probably taste like death in a bottle):
- Celery sticks
- Green cabbage
- Lemon / Lime
- Green grapes
Others (added powders & ingredients to make your smoothie healthier but could alter taste):
- Spirulina Powder
- Super Green Powder
- Linwoods mini variety packs
- Protein powders
Last couple points, if you really want a ‘green looking’ smoothie only use green fruits and vegetables. If you include things like Blueberries, Raspberries or Red grapes expect your smoothies to come out darker green. For those of you who need that touch of sweetness I would recommend adding a bit of honey! Not too much, don’t overdose on the honey that would defeat the purpose of a healthy green smoothie.
Finally, you want to load in all your veg/green and half your fruit into the blender first with around 250-300ml of water, let it blend for roughly 60 seconds then add the rest of your ingredients in and blend for 60-90 seconds, potentially longer or shorter depending on if you prefer a thicker or thinner smoothie.
Then fill it up and drink!
There you have it guys, I hope you found this useful and plan to start drinking your green smoothies. Thank you for reading please share, comment, like and subscribe to read more health tips and continue inspiring the world.
